A PVC floor is durable, easy to maintain, and stylish – but for the most beautiful and long-lasting result, proper subfloor preparation is essential. A flat, clean, and dry base determines whether the floor adheres well and is laid evenly. In this article, De Laminaat Koning explains step by step how to optimally prepare the subfloor for installing a PVC floor .
1. Check the surface
The first step is to check the existing substrate. Whether it's concrete, wood, or tile, the floor must be level, clean, and dry .
-
Flatness: Irregularities greater than 2 millimeters per meter must be leveled.
-
Humidity: Check whether the concrete is completely dry (max. 2.5% residual moisture).
-
Cleaning: Remove any dust, grease, or old adhesive residue to ensure the adhesive or click connection adheres properly.
A poorly prepared subfloor can lead to bumps, loose planks or uneven seams – something you can easily avoid with careful preparation.
2. Leveling the floor
A level surface is crucial for laying PVC, especially adhesive-backed PVC.
Use a leveling compound to fill small height differences and cracks. Apply the leveling compound evenly and let it dry for at least 24
hours.
For wooden floors, it's wise to install a sturdy base plate
before leveling.
Leveling provides a smooth, stable base and prevents irregularities from becoming visible through the PVC later.
3. Applying an underlay or primer
Depending on the type of PVC floor (click or stick), it is advisable to use a primer or underlay.
-
Glue PVC: Use a suitable primer for better adhesion.
-
Click PVC: Install an underlay that provides cushioning and absorbs minor irregularities.
A good subfloor not only provides stability, but also noise reduction and extra insulation – ideal for apartments and houses with underfloor heating.
4. Allow the floor to acclimatize
Before you begin laying, allow the PVC strips or tiles to acclimatize for 48 hours in the room where they will be installed. The temperature should be stable, between 18 and 22°C . This prevents the material from expanding or contracting after installation.
5. Ready to lay
Once the subfloor is level, dry, and clean—and the PVC has acclimatized sufficiently—the floor is ready for installation. Proper preparation ensures a perfect end result and significantly extends the lifespan of your floor.
